Sony Vaio Business Laptop Customer service second to none

Monday, June 15th, 2009

I recently had a hardware with my Sony VAIO laptop, which is still under warranty.  The level of customer service is incredible,  I never seen such dedication and efficiency in any other customer services elsewhere.  My laptop was collected from Ireland on a thursday, fixed in Belgium and delivered back to me by the following tuesday!  I can’t say better than that can be found elsewhere but it is rare for sure.  As a gift they threw in a cleaning cloth, nice gesture. Then followed up with email to enquire on satisfaction and if I needed anything else.

debating tab software - introduction Zorro

Saturday, December 30th, 2006

A common problem in university debating societies has been running the tab fairly. I have software which I wrote several years ago but lost contact with those I knew in the debating community since after I graduated. Anyone out there looking to new options for running a tab are more than welcome to give Zorro a test run free of charge. It is a web based system. It has only just been revived after several years of laying dormant on my old university computer society server account. It has been dusted down but could probably do with a complete rewrite, there are more than likely still bugs in the system and for this I would like to draw on the debating community for help in tracking down these bugs and developing a robust system. As far as I can remember the speaker allocation is finished but might need some pruning and refinement to become an industrial strength application.

I would look forward to any comments and ideas from anyone willing to give the system a trial run, a few live tests to see how the system runs in real world debating scenarios would be of immense use in improving the system, I would however for the moment recommend that Zorro be used alongside an existing known-to-work tab system (if such exists!).

To get setup with Zorro send an email to me requesting a login.

Perhaps let the dust settle after Vancouver and then investigate new tabbing options for the year ahead. In the meantime, to anyone in Vancouver, happy debating!

Tipperary Drought

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006

Since last Saturday evening an area 6 miles in radius has been without water reaching out the Emly road and covering the Shronnel/Latin area. Nearly five day laters we are still dry, and water is a more expensive commodity than petrol to buy. When something you take so much for granted goes away you don’t even realise its affect and in all fairness in this day and age shouldn’t have to realise any of these effects, like lack of water to cook, clean, cool, heat and so many other functions essential to everyday life. And yes, unfortunately, we here are among those in the dessert.

After much talk with the relevant authorities they have initially stated that a pipe burst and the resevoir emptied. Firstly, surely one would notice something the size of several football fields being drained of water before its completely empty! Perhaps a ballcock is not the most efficient method, but seriously they must have something in place as an early warning system. Then this morning they started fumbling around for excuses, stating that a power surge had overloaded a pump out the road. Sounds like a bull-plop way out of saying they don’t have the slightest idea when we can expect a return to normal service.

Thankfully our internet connection has not been affected :-) But coffee intake has had to be cut back!

Robots.txt tip to avoid snoopers

Wednesday, March 29th, 2006

The robots.txt file is used by the search engine robots that crawl the web and build their search indexes. It is a plain text file specifying directories you want the robots to exclude from their index, however a snooper can easily download this file and see what you are trying to hide from the world (unready content, backend/middleware systems, stats, administration tools). The easiest option is security by obscurity, say for example that you have a /admin directory, place an index.html in there stating “Access Denied” or similar, and use something like index_real.html to access. A more secure approach would be to make use Basic HTTP Authentication.
