FireTracker Analytics, our  in-house web traffic analytics software has been some time in beta and we are now glad  to deliver a much more refined product.  There is still some work to do but our recent server and infrastructure upgrade has given us more to work with and an improved user experience.

I hear you asking, why would I pay for an analytics service when Google Analytics is free? There are numerous reasons to add FireTracker to your web traffic analytics arsenal, first and foremost it is a lot more user-centric and user friendly, providing an unparalelled clarity in gaining essential insights into your traffic sources without delving through the bloatware and complexity that is inherent in Google Analytics.  But thats only for starters, the single greatest reason to adopt this alternative is the availability of real-time reporting, no need to wait 3 hours or longer for data refreshes; you will see traffic data to your site as it happens - immediately - no waiting!

Free Trial and new subscription options

Social Media Marketing Seminar

Friday, December 4th, 2009

We are organising a Social Media Marketing seminar for the new year.  Firstly we would like to guage interest and see if their is sufficient demand before setting a date and venue.

Social Media has erupted in the last two years, the power to directly engage and get feedback from your customer base is now a reality.  A social media campaign can be launched to promote your business and build your brand, even if you do not have a company website.  The great advantage of social media is its viral nature and how quickly word spreads.

The seminar will include coverage of business use for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube.  This will include setting up accounts with these services.  We will then demonstate how to go about posting to these sites and where and how to locate information to post, we will also present strategies for gaining a following and encouraging interaction with your client base.

Many businesses find Social Media a bit overwhelming and often struggle to gain ground and exposure, our goal is to ease people into these services so that they know the tips and tricks to further their reach online.

If you are interested in attending this event please get in touch by email, phone or DM @bluestarweb on twitter. Places will be limited to 30 people.  Given that there will be sufficient demand we are aiming to host this event mid-end Janurary.

Using Facebook for Business and Online Marketing

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Facebook is more than just a place for friends and family to connect and interact, this was realised by the Facebook Pages, or Public Profiles. These are the Pages that you see in their newsfeed to ‘Become a Fan’. There are many benefits to using a Facebook Page over your facebook Personal Profile. a number of key benefits:

  • No need to approve friend (fan) requests
  • Greater interaction between you and your fans
  • Fans can post to the wall, upload pictures and videos
  • Polls and discussions can be created
  • Detailed analytics on activity for your Page
  • Option to further promote Page using Facebook Ads

You can get to the Pages control panel by searching for Pages in facebook search box, then go to applications and select Pages. The page creation process often overwhelms some people with the amount of options available. We are of course available to setup a Page for you at a minimal cost.

Some tips for using Pages:

  • When you have created your page, post to it by clicking on the Page name
  • Doing a search on facebook will take you to your Page
  • When your page is ready, use the Suggest to Friends link below the profile picture, select everyone in your friend list.
  • Further promote your page using finely targetting paid advertisng with Facebook Ads.
  • If you have a Twitter account, you can link your Page posts to your tweets

If you are having dificulty managing your Facebook or social media campaign we offer a consultancy service at very reasonable costs, ranging from email and phone consultations to one-to-one training.

Google explains search algorithm flux

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

Google updates their search algorithms and indexes fairly often. Results change all the time. The goal for Google is to make this transparent for searchers by providing relevant results. But when a change happens, typically the webmaster will notice and may be impacted strongly by the update. So what are the Google processes and thoughts behind an update?

Google’s JohnMu has an interesting post at a Google Groups thread in response to a webmaster being upset with a recent change in which results Google is showing for a particular term. In JohnMu’s response, he explains why Google makes changes, for how long the changes may appear and so on. Let me explain that we do not learn much about how the changes work technically, but we do learn the thought process behind Google making these changes.

The premise behind all Google algorithm and index updates are to “improve the users’ experience on our [Google's] sites.” Google’s “engineers are constantly working on” that, day in and day out. So Google is often trying “new things and run experiments” to collect data to help Google come up with new ideas on how to “improve” the search experience.

John explains that these “experiments” and “new things” can “run for a day or for many months.” The thing is, these experiments “generally evolve over time,” so although the experiment may do one thing, it can evolve to do other things (hence the constant Google flux). These changes to the experiments are “mainly based on that data” Google collects as they run tests.

Google is constantly changing their algorithm because “world around us is changing
rapidly, our users’ expectations are changing equally,” as John explains. John adds that “sometimes,” these experiments can “lead to changes which not everyone likes.” “Not every site can be listed in all search results, or even in the top 10,” John adds.
